How Do I Open My PSU Case to Swap Cables?

Hey everyone, I'm trying to upgrade my PC with a new 5070 graphics card, but I've hit a snag. My current PCI cables aren't compatible, and I need to open the power supply unit (PSU) case to unplug the old cables. I've already removed four screws from the bottom, but the case still won't budge, and the rest of the screws look different, almost like they're tamper-resistant. Is there a special tool needed to open it? Or am I just missing something? I really want to try out my new graphics card tonight!

You definitely need a new PSU. The cables you see are probably hardwired into the unit. If they’re not the right ones for your GPU, there’s no fixing that. Just make sure not to open it up, it’s really not safe! Better to do it right with a new power supply than risk getting hurt or damaging your gear.

Got it! I appreciate the help; I’ll order a new PSU!

Yeah, don’t even think about trying to open that PSU! They’re not user-serviceable and can be very dangerous due to high voltage capacitors inside. If you need another connection type, just buy a new PSU that supports it. Also, messing around could lead to injury or damage to your components.

So I guess I should really disconnect everything from my PC and just install the new PSU, right?

It sounds like your PSU has non-removable cables, which means you actually can’t just unplug them and swap them out. If you need different PCIe cables for your new graphics card, unfortunately, you’ll have to get a whole new modular PSU that comes with the right cables. Trust me, trying to open up the PSU isn’t a good idea either, it can be dangerous.

Thanks for clarifying that! What about installation? Do new PSUs come with all the necessary cables?
