Best Lightweight and User-Friendly Linux Distro for an Old Laptop

Hey everyone! I'm trying to breathe new life into an old Windows laptop by installing a lightweight Linux distribution. The main user isn't too tech-savvy, mostly just looking to browse the web and handle basic office tasks. If possible, I'd love to have a distro that could support OneDrive, although this isn't a deal-breaker. Here are the device specs: KIRA BOOK with an Intel i7-5500U CPU, 8GB RAM, and a 64-bit OS. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

You should definitely check out Linux Mint! It’s super user-friendly for newcomers and handles browsing and office work really well. Just keep in mind that Microsoft Office isn’t natively supported, but you can use the online version or switch to LibreOffice for most tasks. OneDrive works with plenty of file explorers, so integration shouldn't be a problem. Since your laptop isn’t too old, Mint should run smoothly on it!

What desktop environment should I choose on Mint? Is XFCE better for performance?

XFCE is great for older hardware, but the default Cinnamon also works well if your device can handle it.

Start by listing your needs and researching desktop environments that fit. Then, try out a couple of distros that meet your goals. There are utilities to measure performance too! Honestly, it’s all about finding what runs fastest on your specific hardware after testing.

You might want to try Zorin OS! It has a pretty intuitive interface and can run Windows applications, including Office. However, I’ve heard their lite version is being retired, so check that out first. As for OneDrive, you might find that it’s mainly accessible through a web browser, which should be okay for basic use.

Is the paid model a big issue? I’ve heard mixed reviews about it.

Yeah, upgrading can be a bit annoying at times. You might want to consider the basic free features first.
