We recently got hit by the Akira Virus and unfortunately, our backups are also compromised. I'm trying to figure out if paying the ransom actually results in getting our files back and if they truly delete our data afterward. Has anyone experienced this firsthand?

From what I've heard, some people do get their data back after paying, but others get nothing. Definitely reach out to the FBI if you're in the USA; they have the means to help recover data for common ransomware cases. Also, consider checking in with any legal counsel you might have before making a move.
It's a tough situation. Many say you shouldn't pay, and while that's ethically correct, it doesn't help if you're in a bind. There's no guarantee that paying will work. I suggest checking if you have cyber insurance, as they can help coordinate with the ransom group. They usually have experience dealing with these situations.
Honestly, I’ve never heard of anyone getting their data back after paying, at least not without a catch. If you can, look into what the FBI has regarding decryptors for Akira; it might be worth a shot before you consider paying. Just remember—if your company has the funds to pay but not to prevent this, that's something to reconsider for the future.
Pretty wild, right? It’s like putting a band-aid on a leak instead of fixing the pipe!
There is a decryption tool available for the Akira virus; check out No More Ransom for more info. But avoid paying if you can. Paying doesn’t guarantee you’ll get your data back, and it can lead to more issues down the line like your data being sold or used against you.
The best bet right now is to not pay the ransom. Instead, focus on what you can control. Secure your sensitive data first, change passwords, and investigate how the breach happened. If you have cyber insurance, they should assist you in dealing with the ransom negotiators. Paying might just put you at further risk in the future.
Makes sense! Also, restoring an immutable offsite backup would have been key if only we had one.
Good point! Consulting legal advice can be crucial here, especially to understand your options.
