What’s the Best Linux Distro for a Laptop with 4GB RAM?

Hey everyone! I'm considering a switch to Linux because my Windows experience has been pretty laggy. Here's what my laptop specs look like: Intel Core i3-1005G1 @ 1.20GHz, 4GB RAM, a 480GB KIOXIA-EXCERIA SSD, and Intel UHD Graphics (Gen11). I primarily use my laptop for browsing the internet and occasionally gaming. Any recommendations or personal experiences with Linux distros that would work well for me? Thanks!

Just a quick note, 4GB of RAM can definitely slow things down. If you can, consider upgrading your RAM to 8GB for a noticeable improvement. It could make a significant difference regardless of the distro you choose!

Honestly, many folks here will suggest lighter distros, but I think Linux Mint Cinnamon is a great choice. It’s faster than Windows 10/11, even on lower specs, and it feels much more familiar for beginners. You can always switch desktop environments later if you want something different!

I’d recommend trying out Linux Mint. It’s user-friendly and has a decent performance even on older hardware like yours. Plus, the Cinnamon desktop environment is pretty easy to navigate if you’re coming from Windows. You might also want to check out PopOS for a solid gaming experience if you’re into that!

Yeah, Mint is awesome for beginners! Definitely give it a shot. But don’t overlook PopOS if gaming is your main thing.

If you're not sure which distro to pick, check out the distro selection page on our wiki. It can help you find one that fits your needs. Just remember to back up your stuff and take it slow! Trying things in a virtual machine is a good way to avoid making mistakes.
