Hey there! I'm trying to figure out if there's technology available to add a second power supply to a server that only has one slot. I'm not looking to prevent power loss overall but rather to guard against the failure of the power supply unit (PSU) itself. I recently searched for solutions, but only found references to automatic transfer switches for circuit redundancy, which doesn't help if the PSU fails. I'm considering a rack-mounted device with dual PSUs that connects to the server where the original PSU is located—basically externalizing the PSUs to provide both circuit and PSU redundancy. Any recommendations or suggestions from those with experience?

You might want to explore manufacturers that offer dual PSU modules for servers, but consider that these may not fit well with your existing setup. They usually start around $400, so it might be worth looking into getting another chassis that comes with redundant PSUs built in.
The new servers from Illumina already have dual PSUs by default, but you're dealing with an older model that only has one, right?
