Questions About AMI Subscription Fees

Hey everyone! I just got my invoice for last month's AMI subscription charge, which I expected. I checked out the product details, but I still have some questions. First, since this is a subscription-based AMI, do I have to pay a flat subscription fee even if I don't launch any instances? Also, will I be charged for the instances I launched from this AMI if they're not running? Plus, I'm curious: if I use an AMI created from a Marketplace subscription, what happens if I try to use one from a non-Marketplace owner? Thanks in advance!

You might want to check this document for more info on your AMI subscription: https://go.aws/44XnZro. And if you still have questions, contacting the AWS Marketplace team can be a good idea too. They can help you out directly.

Hey! For your first question, it really depends on the type of subscription you chose. If it’s an hourly subscription, you only get charged while the instance is running, so no flat fee if you don’t launch anything. As for your second question, same deal applies—if the instance is stopped, you won't be charged either. Regarding your extra question, if you try to use an AMI from a non-Marketplace source that was derived from a Marketplace AMI, it won’t launch unless you hold a subscription for that product. You’ll see an error in CloudTrail. Keep that in mind!

Thanks for clarifying! That really helps.

Have you considered using the free CentOS 9 AMI provided by AWS themselves? It’s worth checking out and might save you some costs!

I thought all CentOS options were paid. The one you mentioned shows as a charge on the AMI Catalog page, which is confusing. But I’m okay with paying for my choices, just trying to understand what's going on with the fees!
