Hey everyone, I'm really confused about the upcoming 3G network shutdown in Canada. I've been trying to figure out if I need to buy a new phone because I've encountered a lot of mixed information. Most sources say I'll need VoLTE capability, but I received an email from Speakout711's customer support stating that only LTE capability is needed, not VoLTE. To complicate things further, when I used the Rogers compatibility tool, it said that my IMEI isn't supported. I also read that my current phone models are capable of VoLTE, but I can't find any settings for it. I've heard that some carriers can turn off VoLTE for certain brands. Can someone clarify if the following phones will work on the Speakout network after September 1? I'm worried I'll have to rush to find a new phone!
1. OnePlus Nord N20 5G
2. Samsung Galaxy Note 9
3. Samsung Galaxy A14 5G

Nord n20 does not work on lte , but N30 works.
Yep, they are shutting down the 3G towers, so anything without at least VoLTE will stop working. It seems like you should focus on having a phone that can show a VoLTE icon to ensure a smooth transition. Your concerns about features are usually tied to whether your phone can use that signal, rather than being locked out by your carrier. You're likely safe with the newer models you mentioned!
Here's a quick breakdown for you:
- OnePlus Nord N20 5G: You're good to go!
- Samsung Galaxy Note 9: It might lose service after the 3G shutdown.
- Samsung Galaxy A14 5G: You're all set with this one too!
Just keep in mind that if your Note 9 was already compatible with VoLTE, it might be due to your carrier's settings not activating it, but that's something to check.
So even if I can't find a VoLTE setting on my OnePlus, it's still okay?
According to the *3G network shutdown* info on the CRTC website, after the 3G shutdown, all calls will have to be made using VoLTE, meaning your phone must support VoLTE. The Speakout711 site also specifies that a 4G LTE device with VoLTE support is required. It's confusing since the customer service rep said otherwise, but it looks like VoLTE is needed after all!
So, is there a reason the customer service rep would say it's not required? That makes no sense!
But my provider said VoLTE isn’t necessary. Why the contradiction?
