Thinking About Switching to Linux: Need Beginner-Friendly Distro Recommendations

Hey everyone! I'm a woman in my 20s with zero experience using Linux, but I've been hearing a lot from my programming friends about how great it is compared to Windows. They're not shy about expressing their dislike for Windows, especially since I'm considering moving away from Windows 10 soon since it's about to reach its end of life. My computer is a home desktop that's about 5 years old with decent specs. I do a lot of Python programming, some MS Office work, play single-player games on Steam, and browse the internet using Brave. I've been looking into Linux distros and found that Linux Mint, especially the XFCE version, seems to be a popular choice for beginners like me. I'm open to suggestions on other lightweight and fast distros that would work well on older hardware. Any advice or recommendations would be fantastic! Thanks!

If you want to try something different, consider Aurora OS; it has great usability. Other options to look into would be Zorin, Bluefin, and MX Linux. They all have solid performance and are very beginner-friendly!

I've used both Ubuntu and Mint, and I think Mint has a slight edge for newcomers, especially coming from Windows. It's just a smoother transition! I also agree that there's no need to go for Kali unless you're into cybersecurity stuff.

Since you're coming from Windows, a dual boot with Ubuntu could be a great way to start. That way, if you run into any issues, you can always boot back into Windows for help or to find solutions online. It's comforting to have that option while you're getting used to a new OS!

I recommend going for Linux Mint. It's super user-friendly and feels a lot like Windows, so you won't feel lost. Plus, the XFCE version is perfect for older computers, just like yours!
