Need Guidance on Transitioning from Full-Stack Development to Cybersecurity

Hey everyone, I could really use some advice. I'm interested in learning about cybersecurity and was initially looking into various courses and bootcamps, but I struggled to find a trustworthy program. The only one that seemed reputable was Infinity Labs in Israel, where you learn for seven months and then work as a cybersecurity expert. However, I realized that I might not have enough time to work while studying. So, I've decided to pivot to full-stack development instead, and I'm currently learning from a mentor who comes highly recommended by a friend. My friend was a student of this mentor and is now a senior full-stack engineer. Now, I'm feeling a bit stuck and would love some tips on how to navigate this situation effectively!

Starting with full-stack development is actually a smart move for a future career in cybersecurity. Many security professionals don't fully grasp how applications work, which limits their effectiveness. By understanding how to build applications first, you will be far better equipped to secure them later on.

At Metana, we've had students who began with full-stack development, excelled at building projects, and then transitioned into security roles. This combination is incredibly valuable because it allows you to communicate effectively with both developers and security teams, rather than just repeating buzzwords.

You mentioned your mentor is trustworthy—if your friend went from student to senior engineer with their guidance, that’s solid proof. Focus on mastering your programming skills first; security knowledge can be layered on later. Plus, it’s nice to earn while you’re learning, rather than being broke for several months like that program in Israel. The demand for cybersecurity professionals with coding skills is only increasing, so building skills first makes a lot of sense!
