I found a connector that looks different from a typical SATA one. The middle part isn't cut like you'd expect. I've tried using a SATA-to-USB adapter but had no luck. Is this connector a normal variation of SATA, or could it be some kind of OEM or proprietary version requiring special equipment?

It's definitely SAS. Unlike SATA, SAS is used more in enterprise setups. If it’s a SAS drive, the label on it should indicate that. You’ll need the right SAS card to make it work.
That looks like a SAS connector, not a standard SATA. SAS drives need a specific RAID card to work, so you won't be able to connect it directly to a regular computer or USB adapter.
Your connector looks like SAS! There are some external cases for SAS drives, but finding one can be quite a challenge. Keep an eye out for any labels on the drive that confirm it as SAS.
This isn't a standard SATA or a proprietary version; it’s a SAS connector. I’ve seen some SAS-to-USB cables, but those are pretty rare nowadays.
