I've been using my older setup with an AMD Ryzen 2700X and a GTX 1080, but I'm struggling to keep up with some games like PoE2 and Rust lately. While it's not completely unplayable, it's getting pretty frustrating. My computer is around 60% productivity and 40% gaming, so I'm considering whether it's time to look at new builds. AM4 seems like it's nearing the end of its life cycle. Given the crazy GPU prices right now, I'm looking at spending around $700 just for a new GPU. Should I be eyeing AM5 builds instead, or should I try to upgrade my existing AM4 setup? I'm also wondering if there's a good GPU/CPU combo for my needs that would let me hold off for the next generation (AM6). My current build has served me well for 7-8 years, and I'm not in a huge rush, but I do want some solid advice before moving forward.

Honestly, I'd say just go for the AM5 upgrade. For about the same price as a Ryzen 5700X3D, you could snag a Ryzen 5 7600 with a decent B650 motherboard. Just adding a couple of DDR5 RAM sticks may only set you back an additional $100-200. That's not too bad for a fresh build with future-proofing benefits.
If you're looking for alternatives, the 5800X3D is a solid choice, boasting 120 FPS in most games. However, the 2700X might still be sufficient performance-wise. It sounds like your bottleneck could be the GPU, especially if you're seeing high CPU usage in games. Consider that if you're leaning towards improving your gaming experience.
Yeah, I agree. My CPU is maxed out while gaming too, but it could also be the GPU holding you back. Might want to look into the performance of both before committing.
