What Linux OS Should I Choose for Privacy and Gaming?

I'm somewhat tech-savvy but definitely not an expert. I can recognize a motherboard and understand what a BIOS is, but coding isn't my game. I'm looking for a Linux operating system that can help me escape the constant data mining and ads that Windows throws at me. What versions are best for privacy and ad-blocking, or especially suited for a first-time Linux user? Right now, I just need something for web browsing, but I might transition to gaming on Steam with Linux if all goes well.

I’d second Linux Mint, especially with Cinnamon as the desktop environment—super user-friendly! For the best ad-blocking experience, go with a Firefox-based browser and add uBlock as the addon. If privacy is your main concern, LibreWolf might be worth checking out as an even more secure option.

If you're new to Linux, a lot of people recommend Ubuntu and its offshoots because they have a strong community for support. I'm planning on using Pop!_OS as my main Linux system, which is built on Ubuntu. It’s user-friendly and should help you get up and running without too much fuss.

Linux Mint is a fantastic choice for anyone coming from Windows. It works well right out of the box, which is great if you’re not looking to dive deep into technical details. For ad-blocking, that usually happens at the browser level. I personally use UBlock Lite on Chrome, but make sure to check alternatives like Firefox with the UBlock addon for a more private browsing experience.

Don’t forget to check out some resources for switching to Linux. There’s a migration wiki that can guide you through the process, plus they have great tips on getting started without running into issues. Remember to be cautious with root access and always verify software before installing.
