Is It Cheaper to Build Your Own PC or Go for a Prebuilt?

I'm considering building a custom PC using a 5090 graphics card along with a solid AMD CPU and other components. I'm trying to figure out whether it's more cost-effective to assemble it myself or to buy a prebuilt system with similar specs. I'm estimating costs around $3500 for building it myself versus $4000 for a prebuilt option. Any insights?

If you build it yourself, you're looking at around $3.3k to $3.4k, and a prebuilt would be around $4k. You might even drop to $3k if you snag the 5090 at MSRP. For example, I set up a 5090, 9800x3d, a 2TB NVMe with DRAM, and 64GB of RAM for about $3.35k. Check out my build on PCPartPicker for ideas!

Wow, a $1000 difference is pretty wild! That’s almost enough to get a decent gaming laptop with the same specs!
