Did a Windows Update Cause My WD SN810 SSD to Fail?

I recently experienced a serious issue with my WD SN810 SSD. While transferring about 38GB of files to my external HDD, my laptop froze and then blue screened, resulting in a 'no boot detected' error. To reboot, I had to long-press the power button to reset the CMOS. This incident occurred right after I uninstalled Windows update KB5063878, which was the only security update I could remove, not the cumulative one associated with it. Interestingly, my SSD isn't listed among those affected by issues from this update. It likely uses an in-house Sandisk controller, quite similar to the one in the SN850. I've regularly backed up large files, sometimes over 70GB, without any previous problems, so this is baffling. Microsoft claims the update isn't responsible for any SSD failures, but it feels suspect to me, especially since my laptop only has one SSD. Has anyone else encountered similar issues?

You should definitely check for dump files in the C:WindowsMinidump folder if you can get back into Windows, whether normally or in Safe Mode. Those dump files could provide important insights into the BSOD. Zip them up and upload them to a file sharing site like Mediafire or catbox.moe. Multiple dump files can help with accurate analysis—if you only have one, at least get that uploaded while you adjust your settings to capture small memory dumps moving forward.

I get your worry about the SSD failure after uninstalling KB5063878. But it's hard to definitively link that specific uninstall to the SSD failing. It makes it seem unconnected. Have you considered that it might be an inherent issue with your SSD instead?

I really think the update is involved. I've been watching videos from people who are experiencing similar issues—screen freezes, blue screens, and having to reset CMOS after large file transfers. It's happened to me, too, and there seems to be a connection. JayzTwoCents has talked about it a lot; his videos show a lot of people facing the same problems.

Exactly! Many people have reported these failures occurring after the update. Even if part of the update can be uninstalled, it doesn't mean the issue isn't related. There's a pattern here that can't be ignored.

When making changes like BIOS settings or modifying your disk setup, there's always a risk of losing data, so make sure your backups are solid before you start tinkering. It's a good practice to check out the FAQs as well! Just a heads up: you might face issues if your configurations go haywire.
