I recently upgraded my PC to solve some crashing issues (it turned out to be my PSU, which I replaced). I was looking for a budget upgrade that would allow me to play games like Kingdom Come 2 at high settings, as well as do music production and video editing. However, I'm concerned that I might have wasted my money on the parts I purchased. Here's what I got:
- CPU: Upgraded from Ryzen 2700X to 5700X3D for $280
- GPU: Upgraded from 2060 SUPER to RX 6800 (non-XT) for $400
What do you all think? Did I make a poor choice or overspend?

Honestly, I think sticking to an Nvidia GPU would have been better for video editing. They usually have better compatibility and performance for that specific task. But I don't see your upgrade as a waste, even though the AM5 path could be better for future upgrades.
I feel like you might have overpaid for the 5700X3D. Still, the choices you made aren’t bad overall. Just keep in mind for next time, maybe weigh the price against performance more.
Nope, you didn’t waste your money.
You could've saved a good amount by going for a used GPU, like I see 3070s selling for around $250 all the time. I have a similar build with a 3070, and it runs Kingdom Come Deliverance on max settings at 90 fps.
From what I see on pricing, you’re in a decent range. Just make sure you have features like SAM enabled, and check if your RAM is set to its rated speed like 3200 or 3600 MHz.
Spending $280 for an AM4 CPU isn’t really worth it any longer. For just a little more, around $300, you could've gone for a new 6-core AM5 CPU, an AM5 motherboard, plus DDR5 RAM that could perform just as well or better and would give you a solid upgrade path.
