Is it legal for Apple resellers in India to require AppleCare with iPhone purchases?

I asked about the new iPhone 17 Pro Max at an authorized reseller in India and was told that I can only pre-order or buy the phone if I also purchase AppleCare. I don't want AppleCare, though. Is it legal for them to force this service on customers when Apple states it's optional? Thanks in advance!

This sounds pretty odd! I’d suggest reaching out to Apple directly, as they might want to know. It’s strange that all resellers in your area are doing this. Could be a tactic to boost their sales during the iPhone craze!

I've already emailed Apple India about it. Fingers crossed they respond soon!

Sounds fishy for sure! If the resellers are not multi-brand and are proper Apple stores, they shouldn't be forcing AppleCare. Make sure to document everything and raise this with Apple when you can.

Yeah, it’s very unusual for authorized retailers to act this way. It might be worth reporting their actions to Apple, as it could be seen as a scam if they’re manipulating the buying process. It’s definitely not how it should work!

It seems like more of a revenue strategy; all the authorized retailers around here are in on it.
