I'm heading to America soon, and I'm planning to buy a GPU there. Since I live in Uruguay, returning it if there's a factory defect would be impossible, and I'm really worried about it not working once I get it home. Would it be crazy to ask the store to benchmark the GPU after I buy it?

Most stores probably won't offer that service. It's best to be prepared for that. But if you're able to, look for open-box GPUs; they're usually tested before they get resold.
