Why is my M.2 SSD making a whining noise when idle?

I've been dealing with an annoying noise that I initially thought was coming from my GPU, but after removing it, I discovered the sound is actually coming from my M.2 SSD. The whining only happens when the SSD isn't being used, and it completely stops when I start downloading something or using it. It's worth noting that this sound doesn't occur in the BIOS. I'm using a Kingston 2TB SSD on a Gigabyte B650 Gaming X AX rev 1.3 motherboard. Has anyone else experienced this, and what can I do to fix it?

It sounds like what you're hearing could be related to electrical interference, even though SSDs don’t have moving parts. Sometimes, the power delivery to these drives can produce a whine. Make sure your SSD is seated properly, and consider checking or adjusting anything electrical nearby that might cause this. It's also worth trying different SATA ports if your drive is not M.2, just to rule out port-specific issues.

That makes sense! I had a similar issue with my old SSD, and switching ports really helped. Just make sure to check if your motherboard is updated too!
