I'm an avid gamer, and I usually don't face major issues with my PC, but I've run into a frustrating problem recently. My frames per second (FPS) are capped at 60 during gameplay, even though my CPU and GPU aren't being fully utilized. This issue suddenly appeared in the last 36 hours.
When I'm in-game menus or pre-game settings, I can hit 144 FPS, and the benchmarks show the same when I test them. It's only when I dive into actual gameplay that my frames drop to 60, while my CPU and GPU only show about 40-55% usage.
I've tried playing Cyberpunk 2077 and Rise of the Tomb Raider, and the problem persists in both games, which makes it even more puzzling. Here's a bit about my setup:
- **CPU**: AMD Ryzen 3600
- **GPU**: RTX 3070ti
- I'm using a 2k monitor with a refresh rate of 144hz.
Before this, I was comfortably playing at 80 to 144 FPS in these games with my CPU and GPU maxing out at about 99%. Now they hardly work hard at all.
I've already restarted my PC, updated my drivers, reinstalled the GPU driver, and tinkered with Nvidia Experience regarding FPS caps and G-Sync/V-Sync settings, but nothing has helped. I really don't understand why I can see 144 FPS in the menus yet get stuck at 60 FPS in game. Any suggestions for fixing this would be greatly appreciated!

Have you tried doing a clean uninstall of your drivers using DDU? Sometimes a background overlay can cap your FPS to 60, and I've seen this happen before with some tricky recording software causing similar issues. It's a bit of a mystery why it happens, but cleaning up the drivers effectively can fix it.
I haven't used any uninstall app for that. I did hear about DDU, but the version I found seemed to require a premium subscription to uninstall. Could you share a link to the free version?
