Should I Upgrade My GPU or Build a New PC for Video Editing and Gaming?

Hey everyone, I'm diving back into video editing after a two-year break and I need some advice. Currently, I have a Ryzen 9 3900X, an RTX 2060 Super, and 32GB of RAM. My editing used to be mostly in 1080p, but now I'm working with 4K footage, including 10-bit video from my Sony camera. I usually edit wedding videos, which can involve 5-8 hours of footage. While I mainly use Premiere Pro, I'm considering switching to DaVinci Resolve but I'm not sure yet. Render times aren't a huge concern for me since I can just let it run overnight.

Additionally, I want to use this PC for sim racing with potentially three 2K monitors, playing games like iRacing and ACC. I'd be happy with 80-100 FPS for that. I also enjoy playing COD Warzone occasionally, but that's just for fun and not competitively.

So, should I just upgrade to an RTX 5070 Ti and stick with my current setup, or do I need to build an entire new PC with an Intel 14700K and the RTX 5070 Ti? I'd prefer to spend as little as possible, but if a new PC is the better route for my workload, I'm willing to go for it since this will be my main workhorse.

If you’re serious about video editing full-time, it might be worth considering a new PC build. The Intel 14700K would give you a significant boost over the 3900X. Just be mindful that the recent Intel chips have had some thermal issues; you might want to look into undervolting or just ensure you have good cooling to avoid any problems down the line. That said, if you want to minimize spending, the new GPU could suffice for now.

Honestly, if I were you, I’d just go for the new GPU. Your Ryzen 9 3900X should handle things pretty well for now, especially since rendering time isn't a major concern for you. Maybe down the line, consider an upgrade to AM5 or a new CPU if you find yourself needing more power later on.

Yeah, I agree! The 3900X is still a solid choice, especially for video editing. You might feel the difference with the new GPU!

This sounds like a good plan! Getting the new GPU will definitely help with that 4K editing.
