Is it safe to put a hard drive directly on a power supply?

I'm upgrading my hard drive and unfortunately, my prebuilt PC has no space for it in the case. The only place left to put my old HDD is directly on top of the power supply. Should I be worried about heating or any other issues by leaving it loose like that?

It's usually best to keep your HDD mounted securely. Putting it directly on the power supply can subject it to vibrations from the fan, which isn't ideal. If you can't find any mounting bays, maybe consider using Velcro to secure it inside the case. That's what I did, and it worked out well!

Totally agree, I wouldn't feel great about it either.

I actually have some spare space inside my case, but the screw holes are not lining up. Velcro sounds like a practical solution!

From my experience, I tried putting an HDD near a power supply and it caused problems. The magnetic fields around the PSU can interfere with the drive and it wouldn't work properly. When I moved it away, it started functioning again.

Seriously, are that many drives necessary instead of just getting a NAS? Seems like a lot of work for storage!

You might want to look into getting a dual-drive caddy that accommodates both 2.5 and 3.5-inch drives. It allows for easy swapping and can be really handy, especially if your case supports it!
