I'm planning to buy an iPhone 17 (base model) in Canada for a friend in France, but all the unlocked versions are sold out everywhere. Unfortunately, I'm leaving Canada in just 9 days and can't wait for the phones to arrive in stores. I've found some options available through carriers, but I want to know if I can buy one of those outright and then immediately cancel the carrier's plan. Will I be able to unlock it so my friend can use it with her French carrier, Orange? Or will the phone be permanently tied to that carrier? I'm not super clear on how this works!

It really depends on the specific carrier. Some might allow you to buy the phone outright and then cancel the plan with little hassle, while others might have restrictions. Just make sure to check their policies before purchasing!
Thanks for the info! Do you know which carriers are more flexible with this? I'm in western Canada and need something that won't lock me in.
