Looking to Switch Careers to Tech: Advice Needed

Hey everyone! I need some guidance on switching my career into software engineering or data analysis. I currently work in sales and customer service, but I'm interested in moving into a field with more valuable skills. I don't have any IT qualifications, and while I have an undergrad degree, it's not related to tech. I'm considering going back to university for a Computer Science degree but am also thinking about pursuing a master's instead. Is that a bad idea? I've also looked into apprenticeships, but I've been told that might be tough without any IT background. I understand having a portfolio is important too. What's the best way to demonstrate my skills and employability without just self-teaching? I'd appreciate any advice—and if anyone else is in a similar situation, I'd love to hear about your experiences!

The entry-level job market is really tough right now, especially without any qualifications or relevant experience. A good first step would be to take some introductory courses, like CS50 or a beginner's data analysis course, to see which field interests you more. From there, you can start working on projects to build a portfolio. Another option could be to leverage your customer service skills to get an IT support role, which could open doors for upskilling later on without going back to university right away.

Hey, thanks for your honesty. I appreciate the reality check, especially given the job market is so harsh right now. Do you think a Master's degree would still be worth it?

Oh, just seen you recommended exactly that!

I'd suggest checking out free courses offered by adult colleges. Getting into the junior software engineering market can be tough, but if you excel in social skills, moving from technical support into engineering within a company that supports that transition could be a smart route. It’s definitely underrated as a path into tech!

This is great, thanks! I’d like to think I have decent social skills since I handle complaints well at work. When you say to go from tech support to engineering, do you mean staying within the same company? How long did it take you to make that move?
