How Can I Keep My Windows Installation While Switching to Linux?

I recently got a new laptop with Windows 11 Pro, and although I've been enjoying using Linux for about 7 months, I don't want to erase the entire Windows installation just in case I need it later. Is there any way I can back up my Windows system onto a flash drive and reinstall it later if needed? I've heard something about creating a system image. Is that similar to what Timeshift does for Linux? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Finally, don't forget to back up your personal files! You can always install Windows fresh later without needing to keep an entire image unless you have specific users or settings you're worried about losing.

To really preserve your Windows setup, consider using a disk imaging tool like Clonezilla or Foxclone. They allow you to create a full image of your drive before you install Linux, so if you decide you want Windows back, you can restore it from that image. Just remember, this backup will need a decent amount of storage space.

I plan to format the laptop fully. For a fresh Windows 11 install, how big does my flash drive need to be? And do I need to download Foxclone on the system or can I prepare it offline?

Your Windows license is tied to your Microsoft account, so if you ever want to reinstall it, you can download a clean Windows installer directly from Microsoft and use your license key for activation. It's often cleaner than restoring an old system image.

You could also consider physically swapping drives if your laptop allows it. Just install Linux on a new SSD and keep your Windows installation on the original drive. This way, everything stays in place, and you have the option to switch back whenever you need to.

I'd have to check if the memory is soldered or not. Is there really no other way to make a backup to an external drive?

Your Windows product key is tied to your motherboard or your Microsoft account, so you won't lose it, even if you wipe your drive. Just make sure to save your personal data files! You can get your Windows key from your system settings or with a third-party key finder tool if you want to write it down before switching.

That's a relief! How can I find the activation key? I got the laptop second-hand.

You can usually find it in your settings under "Update & Security" > "Activation"!
