Can I Go Freelance in Web Development Without Design Skills?

Hey everyone! I've been a web developer for over ten years, and I'm pretty confident in my front-end skills, dealing with everything from internationalization to fancy CSS. However, when it comes to design, I'm not as experienced. I usually support designers with tweaks but have never started a project from scratch on a blank page. I'm curious about how feasible it is to freelance without design skills. Will clients expect me to handle both design and delivery? How do other freelancers manage the design aspect?

Teaming up with a designer is a smart move! You can't pretend to be a designer and expect good results. I found my work improved significantly and I could charge more when I partnered with a designer who created layouts in Figma. It's way easier to work together than to do it all alone.

Templates are your friend! You can easily repurpose them if you lack design skills. Just find good ones online, and it can save you a lot of time instead of starting from scratch.

To succeed freelance, strong marketing skills are crucial. You really need to sell yourself, even if you hate marketing! Can’t escape it in the freelance world.

It really depends on the client. Some clients have very clear ideas while others have no clue about design and just want a functional website. I've worked with clients who sketched their ideas on a notepad, while others just told me the colors they liked. You need to adapt to what they bring to the table.

Honestly, why worry about design? If you can code well, some clients won't care much about the aesthetics. Just focus on delivering good functional work!
