What to Do If an Extension Was Added to My Browser Without My Consent?

I was browsing Google when I got a message in my Brave browser saying, "An Extension has been added by a program on your computer. McAfee." I opted to remove it, but now I'm uneasy and wondering if there's a virus lurking on my computer. I've checked, and there's no McAfee software on my system, nor have I installed anything unfamiliar recently. I ran a scan with Microsoft Defender, and it came back clean. What should I do to ensure my computer is virus-free?

If McAfee popped up without you installing it, consider it a red flag. You should definitely check your installed programs and clear out anything suspicious. And if you want to be extra cautious, you could also reset your Brave browser settings to clear out any potential threats.

There’s a chance that you might have some sort of malware if you didn't install McAfee intentionally. It's wise to do a thorough check. You might want to run a malware-specific tool like Malwarebytes to scan your system for anything that Microsoft Defender could've missed.
