Why is my PC crashing with CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT errors while idle?

I've been having issues with my Windows 11 setup, which includes a Ryzen 5900X, Aorus X570 Elite, and a 3080 Ti. For the past week, I faced sporadic DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION BSOD errors, but they weren't generating any minidumps or full dumps. Today, after updating my BIOS, the error switched to CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT, which thankfully left a minidump and full dump this time.

The crashes always happen when the system is idle or under low load; I could be watching YouTube or have no heavy applications running. Previously, the old errors would trigger after a few minutes of inactivity, but now I get less than a minute before the system becomes unresponsive, often leading to a BSOD. I've tried a bunch of fix attempts: disabling XMP, updating all drivers, rolling back NVIDIA drivers, reseating hardware, repairing corrupted drivers, and running MemTest86. The only improvement came with the BIOS update.

I've come across suggestions that it might be driver-related or due to overheating of my CPU. I've got some dump files if anyone needs to look through them for clues. Additionally, it's frustrating because enabling Driver Verifier seems to keep the system running without crashes. Any insights or solutions would be appreciated!

It sounds like you might want to dive into your BIOS settings and turn off Global C-state Control. After that, don't forget to install the latest AMD Chipset Drivers if you haven't done so already. That combo has worked for many folks dealing with similar issues. Also, make sure you disable Driver Verifier; it can often prevent the crashes when you're trying to diagnose them!

Yeah, I disabled Driver Verifier once I realized it was probably preventing the crashing, lol. Tentatively, this seems to have fixed it, but I'll give it a few hours of idling before I call it for sure. Thank you so much!! Out of curiosity, I built this machine in 2020-- is there any particular reason this crash would start happening out of the blue now?? Very glad it's seemingly been fixed though!
