How Can I Take Control of My Website from My Developer?

Hey everyone, I'm reaching out for some advice on a situation I'm dealing with. I run a small business, and earlier this year, someone built a website for us. Unfortunately, working with the developer has been really difficult, and they didn't listen to our requests during the development process.

Here's what I do know:
- We own our domain, which we bought through Hover.
- The website was built on WordPress, something I know how to use, so I'd prefer to stay with WP if possible.
- The site is currently hosted by the developer on Hostinger.

What I really need help with is:
- How can we detach from the company that made the site?
- What do I need to do to start hosting the site ourselves?

Thanks in advance for any tips or insights you might have!

I totally understand how you feel—it's frustrating when you can't get the support you need. As for moving your site, just back up your WordPress files and database to start. Then you could either ask your current developer for help with migration or check if your new hosting provider can handle it for you!

Good point! Many host providers will assist with migration for free, so that’s worth looking into.

Since it's a WordPress website, you should definitely get full admin access from your developer. Install a plugin like All-in-One WP Migration on your site to export everything, including files, themes, and plugins into a single downloadable file. After that, set up your account with a new hosting provider, install WordPress, and use the same plugin to import your site. It's pretty straightforward once you've got the hang of it!

The goal here is more about reclaiming your digital property rather than separating from a company. Just focus on getting a complete backup of your WordPress files and your database. Once you have that, you can easily move your site to any host you choose!

You're in a solid position since you already own the domain. Just ask your developer for full access to both your WordPress and the hosting account. Make sure to back everything up, then you can move it to your own Hostinger account. Once that's done, you'll be able to manage it all without worrying about the developer anymore!
