I'm curious about the stark price difference between two power supplies: the Seasonic VERTEX PX-1000 (1000W) and the Gigabyte Aorus Elite Platinum (GP-AE1000PM PG5 ICE). Can anyone explain why the Seasonic has such a premium compared to the Gigabyte? I'm building a system with a TUF 5080 OC and an i9 10850k. Based on their reputation and quality, which one would you recommend?

Gigabyte doesn’t manufacture their PSUs in-house, and they’ve had past reliability issues, so they’re generally seen as a budget option. Seasonic, on the other hand, is well-regarded for their reliability and quality, which justifies their higher price point. If you're interested in long-lasting quality, I’d steer clear of Gigabyte for PSUs. Check out some PSU tier lists to find reliable options in the same wattage range.
Seasonic offers a 12-year warranty while Gigabyte has 10 years. The Gigabyte isn't tested on the tier list but is speculated to be decent. Seasonic is certified Platinum for efficiency and is better rated for noise. Both models are older and lack features like ATX3.1 support, so if you're primarily gaming, I'd recommend looking for newer models with the latest connectors.
It's mainly for gaming, so I'm hoping the CPU isn't a bottleneck. Maybe I should look for a newer 3.1 PSU? Is this tier list legit: [PSU Tier List](https://www.esportstales.com/tech-tips/psu-tier-list)?
Yeah, that list is pretty reliable!
Seasonic is one of the original PSU makers, and they’re expected to introduce a new feature for the 12V hot power connection soon. That might also factor into the pricing. Gigabyte PSUs are typically more basic, and you’ll get better features with the Seasonic model.
Seasonic has built a strong reputation over the years. Four years ago, Gigabyte had some faulty PSUs that caused serious issues, and they've been viewed as less reliable since. Personally, I tend to avoid Gigabyte for PSUs when I can.
That’s good to know—thanks!
It seems like Seasonic is slightly overpriced for what it offers and doesn't support the latest standards, while the Gigabyte PSU is fair for a basic model. Seasonic provides better cables and added features like a quiet operation mode at lower loads. If you're not looking for top-shelf performance, the Gigabyte could work just fine.
Thanks for the insight!
I've had an EVGA 1000W for over a decade, and it still runs great. I also bought a Gigabyte Aorus Pro 1000W recently, and it’s holding up well too. Generally, a PSU won’t fail unless you go with a really low-quality one.
Well, one is a power supply, and the other is a potential ticking time bomb.
