What CPU Should I Upgrade to for an RTX 3090?

I'm hoping to upgrade my father's old PC setup for Christmas. He's currently using an Intel i5-12400F along with an RTX 3090, and I'm worried that he might struggle to play games smoothly at 1440p on ultra settings. Given that he's also into VR gaming, which CPU should I suggest that fits the LGA1700 socket for a better performance?

If you're on a budget, you could go for the i5-12600K or even the i5-12600KF. I use one for gaming and get around 100+ FPS at 1440p on this game—and about 80+ FPS at 4K on my RTX 5070. The i5-13600K and i7-14600K are solid choices too, depending on your budget!

Cool, thanks for the options!

Upgrading to something like the i7-13700K or i9-14900K would really do the trick. If you want a more budget-friendly option, the i5-14600K is good too! Here are some links to check them out.

Honestly, the 12400F should work fine for most games. If you're looking for smooth 1440p gameplay, definitely give it a shot first. Don't forget to adjust the settings if needed!

But considering he's into VR too, I think he might need something more powerful than the 12400F.
