I recently switched from Windows to Linux Mint Cinnamon, and my old laptop runs faster than ever! I'm really enjoying my experience, but I've run into trouble when it comes to installing software. I'm trying to install Tor directly from the Tor website, not through the software manager. I downloaded a file with a .tar.xz extension, but I'm not sure how to install it. I was told that double-clicking won't work, and I received some complex commands, which I'm nervous about using because I don't want to mess things up.
Is installing software usually this tricky? It feels like every application has a different installation method, and I'm spending too much time searching for the right commands for each one.

Using a package manager is the way to go for installing software on Linux. The process you mentioned—downloading from the internet—is more of a Windows thing. Most major distributions have user-friendly GUIs for managing packages, so try to stick with that.

That's a good point! But what if an app isn't available in the repository? Sometimes I find myself stuck.
