Is Sharing a 50 Mbps Fiber Connection with My Neighbor Worth It?

I'm considering sharing a 50 Mbps fiber internet plan with my neighbor since internet costs are high where I live. It's just $27 total, so splitting it would mean I pay $13.50. I mainly want to use it for my home server, primarily for Jellyfin and torrenting, while my neighbor will also use it for IPTV and YouTube. In total, we might have about 10-12 people using the connection across both households.

I'm particularly worried about how well IPTV will work given this setup, especially since I'm planning to limit torrenting to 2 Mbps to preserve bandwidth. The provider has a solid reputation, but I'm interested in knowing how effective this shared connection might be. Also, any suggestions for the best way to set this up while maintaining security and separating our networks would be appreciated!

You should really think about upgrading to the 100 Mbps plan! It seems like everyone will be using the internet at once, and with only 50 Mbps, your IPTV experience might suffer. It's definitely not worth risking buffering during a show. As for dividing your access securely, you could look into setting up a guest network that isolates your devices from your neighbor’s. That way, you'll both have your own secure space to operate within the same connection.

I think 50 Mbps shared among 10-12 people is definitely pushing it, especially with everyone streaming and surfing. You might want to consider a higher plan if possible. 100 Mbps would give you a lot more breathing room, and it’s only a little more for better speeds. Just think about it—having everyone trying to use the internet simultaneously could lead to some serious slowdowns. You'll probably want to prioritize the bandwidth for IPTV for a smoother experience. Plus, if your neighbor pays the extra, it might be worth the peace of mind!

Exactly! If you only have 50 Mbps, that might feel like dial-up with so many users. Definitely lean towards the 100 Mbps option if you can.

Also, keep in mind that upload rates can be lower on lower-tier plans—consider that if you're torrenting!
