Best Lightweight Linux Distro for an Old Netbook with Vertical Taskbar

I'm currently using Kubuntu on my older Atom dual-core netbook, and I'm experiencing some lag. I'm looking for a lightweight desktop distro or environment that allows me to place the taskbar vertically on the left side of the screen, as I remember that about 10 years ago, only KDE and XFCE offered this feature. I've heard of distributions like MX Linux, Xubuntu, and Mint with XFCE, but I'm curious which one would be the best choice for my setup. I'm also open to any other lightweight options outside of XFCE, as long as they can accommodate a vertical taskbar. Ten years ago, I tested Mate and LXQT, and those didn't have that capability either.

Lubuntu with LXQt is definitely worth checking out! You can place the taskbar on any side, which fits what you're looking for.

If you're open to alternatives, consider LXQt. It allows you to put the panel on the left side easily, and it's lightweight enough for your needs.

Honestly, MX Linux is a solid choice, and I've found it to run smoothly on older hardware. Just make sure to check if it aligns with what you need for the taskbar.

For something really lightweight, you might want to look into antiX or Lubuntu with LXQt. Both of them support a vertical taskbar, so they could be good fits for you.

How much of a potato is your netbook? What's the RAM capacity? Knowing the specs would help narrow down the options a bit!
