I'm looking into building my next PC and trying to decide between the 7800x3D and 9800x3D CPUs to pair with an 5080 GPU. What do you all recommend? Is one significantly better than the other for gaming, especially at 1440p or 4K?

You’re going to see people push for the more expensive option—the 9800x3D. But honestly, it boils down to your budget. If the 9800x3D isn’t too much more than the 7800x3D, go for it. Just keep an eye on possible future CPU releases if you want to avoid buyer's remorse.

It's all about how much you value the performance boost. The 9800x3D outperforms the 7800x3D by about 11% in most scenarios, but you'll need to weigh that against its price. Some games are still CPU-limited at higher resolutions, so a better CPU could last through future GPU upgrades.

Both CPUs are solid choices, but there's a clear price factor to consider. The 7800x3D is currently on sale for $280 at Microcenter, making it a great deal, especially if you’re not gaming at 1080p. The 9800x3D offers better performance in specific games, especially CPU-intensive ones. However, with a new version of the 9800x3D coming soon, it might be worth waiting for a solid deal instead of rushing into a purchase.

If you’re aiming for 1440p or 4K gaming, the performance difference between the 9800x3D and 7800x3D isn't huge. The 9800x3D is a bit faster, but it mainly shines at lower resolutions, like 1080p. Do you really need the best gaming CPU right now, or are you looking for good value? That's the real question here!
