What’s the best OS for an old Acer laptop for everyday tasks?

I'm trying to figure out what OS to install on my older Acer laptop. It's a first-gen Pentium M with 2GB of RAM, and unfortunately, I can't run Windows 10 due to the lack of XD-bit support. I initially thought of installing Windows 98, but the onboard audio isn't working properly, so that didn't pan out. I've tried Debian and had some issues with it, so I'm looking for a lightweight Linux distro that can handle everyday tasks like browsing the web, watching YouTube videos, and doing office work. I've already upgraded the laptop with a new battery and an ATA SSD, and I really want to make the most out of this machine!

Honestly, because your laptop is quite old, running modern applications like web browsers or high-definition videos might be a struggle. Since you had issues with Debian, I'd recommend checking out antiX, which is based on Debian but leaner and often better for older hardware. It has legacy kernels you can try if the default ones don't work well. Other options like Alpine Linux or Adelie Linux are also worth looking into; they work great on older machines and have user-friendly package managers. Adelie even offers live CDs with different desktop environments to test out!

I had similar issues with GUIs, especially with anything graphically intensive like Enlightenment. OpenGL support was pretty spotty, and I had loads of freezes. If you can find a lightweight option without the bells and whistles, that might help.

You might want to try antiX along with running the uBlockOrigin extension in your browser. Just a heads up, though—this setup won't handle 720p video too well due to hardware limitations. Expect to be stuck with 480p video at best, especially depending on your CPU and internet speed.

YouTube can be a real memory hog, so keep that in mind. If you're set on watching videos, remember that with only 2GB of RAM, streaming might get tricky no matter the OS you choose.
