Is It Worth Trying Linux with Nvidia Again?

About three months ago, I made the leap to Linux with my first distro, Fedora KDE. Prior to that, I had been using Ubuntu in virtual machines and loved the experience. However, I ran into major issues during updates. While some updates worked fine, others completely broke my system, leading me to switch back to Windows after a frustrating 2-3 week stint. The last update left my GUI unusable, and despite efforts to uninstall Nvidia drivers and change the kernel version, nothing worked. It seems like there may have been issues with Wayland or KDE Plasma, but I'm still unsure. I'm curious if Nvidia users can expect better experiences moving forward. Did I mess up by choosing Wayland over X11 or KDE over Gnome? Was Fedora too unstable for my needs? Should I consider switching to a different GPU like Radeon or Intel instead?

Nvidia generally works fine on most modern distros, but it’s crucial to stick with the drivers provided by your package manager rather than downloading them directly. Fedora can be a little tricky since it doesn’t officially support Nvidia, so you’ll want to use the RPM Fusion repository. If you’re looking for an easier experience, consider a distro that comes with Nvidia drivers pre-installed, but be cautious of manually tinkering as that can lead to issues.

You might want to check out immutable distros like Bluefin or Bazzite. They lock down system files, which can help prevent accidental screw-ups. They’ve been reported to work really well with Nvidia hardware, especially for newcomers who want a smooth experience without too much tinkering.

I totally agree! Bazzite has been a fantastic experience for many people with Nvidia setups—definitely worth trying out.

If you want a hassle-free experience with Nvidia, try using Manjaro. It’s been smooth for us, and we run it on multiple machines with Nvidia cards without any issues. You could also consider flatpak updates and keep your system updated regularly to avoid compatibility pitfalls.
