What’s the Best Way to Try Out a New Linux Distro?

I'm about to get a new PC and I'm thinking about switching from Fedora to a different Linux distro. I plan to use a virtual machine to test a few options, but I'm not entirely sure how to go about it. What should I look for after I install a new distro? Any tips or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

You can check out distros directly in your browser using https://distrosea.com/. Just a heads up, you might need to sign up if you want to use Wi-Fi. It's a pretty convenient way to try different distributions without having to install them right away!

Installing KVM is a great way to create VMs for testing out distros. Just make sure to keep the VMs until you feel you've tested everything important to you. A few things I look for when testing are reliability, software performance, and whether the updates affect functionality positively or negatively. By the way, using Virt-Manager to manage your VMs can make things a lot easier.

I recently installed Alma, and it comes with Boxes pre-installed. It’s been great for testing out various distros since it’s based on libvirt, similar to KVM. It really simplifies the whole experience!

If you're considering a switch, think about what specific changes you want from your current setup. This will help you narrow down what to look for. Just use the new distro in the VM like you would normally use your OS. If gaming is a priority, you might want to consider dual-booting instead.
