I'm curious about what tasks you tackled when you first started as a cloud engineer. Given that DevOps can involve so many different tools and technologies, what were your initial assignments when you landed your first role in AWS or Azure?

I joined a company that was migrating to the cloud, and they brought me in to figure out why costs were skyrocketing. They had just lifted everything and shifted it from on-premises without any adjustments. I went from having no prior cloud experience to designing scalable infrastructures and deployment processes.
As a new hire, my first project was to run traffic analysis on an old, deprecated service. I had to confirm it wasn’t receiving any traffic and then shut it down, which was a great introduction to my role.
My first gig involved deploying everything to Azure and automating the entire process. It was intense, but it set the stage for my growth. Now, as a senior software engineer, I find myself doing similar tasks all over again!
My first major assignment was to create a PCI DSS compliant infrastructure because I was one of the few developers interested in the more challenging aspects of infrastructure and automation. It was a big undertaking for a small organization, but it gave me invaluable experience.
