Thinking About Switching to Linux Mint – Need Some Advice!

I've been using Windows 10 for quite a while now, and with support ending this October, I've decided it's time for a change to Linux. I'm familiar with Ubuntu and RedHat from my job and can work with the terminal comfortably. My computer is primarily for gaming but I also do some video editing and coding from time to time. I'm considering Linux Mint since it seems user-friendly, but I have several questions regarding its compatibility and functionality: 1. How well does Dolphin Emulator run on it? 2. What's the go-to software for video editing on Linux? Sony Vegas isn't going to work, I'm guessing. 3. What should I know about running games with heavy anti-cheat software? 4. I have an Nvidia 3000 series GPU. Does it work well on Linux now, considering past issues with driver support? 5. Are there any downsides to choosing Linux Mint over standard Ubuntu? 6. What's the best way to migrate, especially with my four drives? Is NTFS going to be a problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you’re looking for video editing, definitely check out Davinci Resolve or the free Kdenlive. Nvidia support has improved quite a bit, but watch out for those drivers since they can sometimes lag behind. Just be aware that there are easier experiences with AMD or Intel due to their open-source drivers.

I didn’t realize AMD had a smoother experience! What about NVENC? Does it just work better for editing with Nvidia?

I'd actually caution against Mint because it’s quite dated. You might run into issues with either the legacy X11 or a Wayland compositor that can break down, leading to a frustrating experience. You might want to consider distributions like Fedora Workstation or even Arch Linux if you're up for the challenge.

Sounds kind of extreme! But I get it. Mint might not be the ultimate choice for everyone.

1. Dolphin Emulator runs really well on Linux Mint, so no worries there!
2. Davinci Resolve is usually the top choice for video editing on Linux. Kdenlive is a solid free alternative and Blender can also do some great compositing work if you're into that.

Thanks for confirming! And I appreciate the video editing tips, I've heard good things about Davinci Resolve!

I made the switch from Windows to Pop!_OS which comes with built-in Nvidia support and disk encryption. But Mint is definitely a solid option as well! Many users have success getting the drivers installed, so don’t let that be a dealbreaker.

Pop!_OS sounds great too! I’ll look into that along with Mint.

Honestly, running Mint over plain Ubuntu really doesn’t have major drawbacks. It’s all Linux, so the capabilities are similar. Mint just has some things preconfigured for ease. If you prefer it to avoid some of Canonical’s recent changes, go for it!
