What Are the Most Engaging Jupyter Notebooks for Teaching Python?

Hey everyone! I'm gearing up to teach a Python training session and while I have some Jupyter Notebooks from past courses, they often feel a bit stale. The session will cover Python fundamentals like variables, data structures, functions, and classes, before moving on to libraries such as NumPy and Matplotlib, as well as file I/O. I'm looking for suggestions on the most engaging Jupyter Notebooks you've encountered during your learning journey. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

If you're focusing on data visualization, I'd strongly suggest teaching Plotly Express instead of Matplotlib. I haven't used Matplotlib in ages since Plotly allows for instant interactive figures, which are great for students!

While I see the value in Plotly, I prefer to start with Matplotlib for foundational skills. It really depends on the context and how students will apply these skills later.

I recently switched all my lectures to Marimo and it's been fantastic! The conversion feature is super helpful, and it highlights issues like reusing variable names, which is crucial for good coding practices. You should definitely explore it!

I tried out Pluto.jl notebooks, which are similar to Marimo. It took me a bit to get used to, but now I love how they force you to think before coding!

While I don't have specific notebooks in mind, you should check out Marimo notebooks. They're like Jupyter, but way more advanced! It really enhances the interactive experience.

I definitely agree! I love the widget experience in Marimo.

I’ve created several notebooks for teaching Python in classrooms. Feel free to use anything from my collection here: https://github.com/nickdelgrosso/CodeTeachingMaterials/tree/main/notebooks. There's a lot of good stuff that might help you out!
