Looking for Lightweight Linux Distros for Media Streaming on a Slow ThinkPad

I have a ThinkPad X240 with 8GB of RAM and an Intel i5-4300U CPU. It currently has a standard hard drive and takes a frustrating 5 to 7 minutes to boot into Windows. I installed Kubuntu, but it hasn't performed well for me, especially on boot-up. I'm primarily looking to use this laptop for media streaming via Firefox and Stremio, but Firefox is my main focus. It's connected via HDMI to my 1080p TV, and I'm wondering if a lighter Linux distribution could help reduce boot times or if the slowness is an inherent issue with my hardware. Are there any recommended distros that work well for this use case?

I use Debian with KDE Plasma on a similar setup, and it runs smoothly without issues. You might want to consider that.

5 to 7 minutes? That’s way too long! I have an old T43 running Void with XFCE and it boots in under 2 minutes. For lighter options, you could try Lubuntu, Xubuntu, or MX Linux with XFCE. They’re much easier on resources.

It sounds like your hard drive might be a major bottleneck. Switching to a SATA SSD could work wonders—my X230 ThinkPad boots in about 40 seconds with one. I doubt the distro is the main issue here, but it's worth trying lighter ones to see if they help.

You might want to check out LibreELEC. It's lightweight and boots directly into Kodi, so it won't hog your resources. I run it on a really low-end AMD processor with just 2GB of RAM, and it works like a charm!

With your setup, a lightweight distro shouldn’t be a problem at all. I stream 1080p content without any issues on a similar machine, but definitely consider that the HDD is likely slowing you down. An SSD can cut the boot time significantly!
