Why Does My SSD Keep Dropping to 0 MB/s?

Hi everyone! I have this frustrating issue with SSDs. No matter whether they're new or older ones from friends, every time I try to transfer files or download games from Steam, the speed drops to 0 MB/s. It's super annoying! I'm currently using Windows 11. Does anyone know what might be causing this?

Have you thought about disabling Write Caching? You can do this by going to Device Manager, finding your SSD under Disk Drives, right-clicking on it, and going to properties. From there, go to Policies and uncheck 'Enable write caching.' That might help with performance!

A couple of things to consider:

1) Technically, it's not 'new' if your friend had it before.

2) Windows often conducts on-demand file scanning during transfers, which might be causing the slowdown. If that's the case, check your task manager for the 'Antimalware Services Executable.' It can use a lot of resources.

3) Lastly, if it’s a cheaper SSD, it might not have a DRAM cache, which can greatly affect performance under load.

You might want to try downloading CrystalDiskInfo to check your SSD's SMART values. That can give you some insights into the drive's health and performance.

Make sure your SSD isn’t too exposed. If it’s not in a protective case, and it drops, that can be as bad as dropping your phone! Always good to keep things safe.

Yeah, it definitely has a cover, so that's not the issue.

What specific models are you using? Also, does the speed just stick at 0 MB/s, or does it go up and down? Knowing that could help narrow down the issue.
