Choosing Between SSD Options for My New PC Build

I'm gearing up to upgrade my PC for the first time in about eight years, and while I've learned a lot during that time, understanding SSDs is still a bit of a mystery for me. I've only ever used a traditional hard drive before this!

I'm not sure whether to go for the faster Crucial T705 2TB NVMe M.2 PCIe 5.0, or the Crucial P510 2TB NVMe M.2 PCIe 5.0 (which has a heatsink). I'm mainly focused on playing AAA games and handling university assignments. I've got dual monitors, one 4K at 160Hz and another 1080p.

For context, the T705 is supposedly faster overall, but I've heard it can get pretty hot, even with a heatsink, and I haven't had to deal with managing heat issues in my current setup. What do you think? Will the performance difference matter for my needs, and is heat an actual concern I should worry about?

If you’re planning on recording gameplay, consider getting a larger SSD, like a 4TB. If not, 2TB should be more than enough just for gaming.

Just a heads-up: dual monitor setups can sometimes impact SSD performance based on how you're using them, but you should be fine with either option. Just check to make sure both SSDs will fit in your motherboard's slots without any issues.

When it comes to SSDs, you generally have three types: QLC, TLC, and TLC with DRAM. QLC isn’t great, so I’d steer clear of that. TLC is solid, especially when it has DRAM. As for your options, the Crucial P510 is TLC but without DRAM, while the T705 has DRAM and is faster overall. Honestly, for office work and gaming, both would perform really well, and you probably won’t notice much difference in real-world performance. Just be cautious about the heat on the T705; if you haven't dealt with heat management before, maybe go for the P510 since it’s cooler.

Quick question: why is RAM important in an SSD?

I think it’s worth noting that both options are around the same price, almost just a $5 difference. However, people say the T705 might run hotter, and I’m not sure if that’s a big deal for you since you've managed heat fine before.

Unless you have really specific needs, there's not much reason to go all out for Gen 5.0 SSDs. Something like DDR4 6000 CL30 RAM is typically the sweet spot for most builds.

Good to know! I actually have the 6000MHz Vengeance planned for my build!
