Is Upgrading from DDR4 to DDR5 Worth the Cost?

I'm currently using 32 GB of DDR4 RAM at 3600 MHz with CL16. I'm considering making the jump to DDR5, but it would mean replacing not just the RAM, but also my motherboard and CPU. I'm curious about the actual gaming performance difference between DDR4 and DDR5 when using the same CPU and GPU. Furthermore, RAM prices are quite high right now, which adds to my hesitation. Recently, I've got a 12400F processor paired with a 3060 12GB, and I'm weighing the options of upgrading to a Ryzen 7700 with a new graphics card (from a selection like the 5070 or 9070) and motherboard, or just sticking with my current setup and swapping to a 14600KF CPU. So, how much of a performance boost can I realistically expect if I switch to DDR5, considering the CPUs involved?

Honestly, upgrading to DDR5 right now might not be worth it for you. You could see just single-digit percentage improvements in most gaming scenarios. It might be better to just upgrade the CPU instead and wait for RAM prices to drop.

Agreed, better focus on that CPU upgrade first!

The difference in performance isn't huge unless you're looking at the higher-end CPUs. If you're on a budget, it might be smart to think about which games you play and your monitor's resolution. Those factors play a bigger role than RAM alone.

If your CPU isn’t pushing its limits with DDR4, then the upgrade to DDR5 probably isn't going to give you a much better experience at gaming. Just make sure your whole system aligns with your upgrade path to avoid bottlenecks.

Definitely check out recent tests like the one from Hardware Unboxed. They say the difference can be as high as 20%, but it will vary by game. If you’re gaming at 4K, the impact of RAM is reduced quite a bit.

Yeah, I saw that video too! If you’re not playing at 4K, though, it could be quite noticeable.

Upgrading to DDR5 could give you around a 15-20% boost in performance under certain conditions, but don't forget, if you're also changing CPUs, that makes a bigger difference overall. If you're looking at just RAM swaps, it's not the biggest leap.
