Looking to Upgrade My Son’s Gaming PC – Suggestions for CPU, GPU, and Case?

Hi everyone! I'm planning to upgrade my son's PC, which he uses for gaming titles like Fortnite and Minecraft, and he's also getting into racing sims. We want to invest around £500 for a CPU, GPU, and a new case.

I found a PCPartPicker list that includes an AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, which is cheaper than the 5600X and could be better for content creation. For the GPU, I have a Sapphire PULSE Radeon RX 9060 XT picked out. It's supposed to have good VRAM, but I'm not sure if that's more important than having a card with more features instead.

Right now, he's gaming on a 1080p 75Hz monitor, but I plan to upgrade that soon as a birthday surprise.

About the case – I haven't selected one yet since my budget is tight, but I'm thinking around £70 for a decent one. I need a case where the power button and I/O are on the top or near the side due to space constraints. He likes the design of my Montech Air 95 Pro, but that's out of budget. Would love your insights on the CPU/GPU choices and case suggestions!

Your son will be thrilled moving from a 1660 Ti to a 9060 XT! That upgrade should definitely push his next monitor to 1440p, which would be a great step up. Just a heads-up though, some of the more recent games might struggle at 4K on that card, often needing to be upscaled to get to 60 fps. So, 1440p seems like a sweet spot! If he's into FPS games, an ultrawide monitor would really blow his mind.

I think aiming for 1440p on that card might be optimistic. You might want to consider something like a 5070 alongside a used 5600 for about £50. That might be a more balanced option!
