High Idle Temperatures for 9800X3D: Should I Consider a Cooler Upgrade?

I recently built my setup with a 9800X3D and I'm quite surprised by how high my idle temperatures are. Currently, with a Phantom Spirit 120SE cooler, my CPU sits around 47-49°C when idle. This seems high compared to my previous CPU, which idled at about 32°C with a Scythe Fuma 2 cooler. I'm wondering if the Phantom Spirit 120SE is not as great as it's marketed or if my thermal paste application method could be affecting the temps. A coworker of mine has an ASUS 360mm AIO cooler and his temps stay in the low 30s. I haven't stress tested the CPU extensively yet, but after gaming a bit (League of Legends, which is CPU reliant), my temperatures did not exceed 59°C. Should I switch to a liquid cooler, or would it be better to run more tests first?

I can totally relate! I have a 9800X3D too and my idle temps vary significantly. The I/O die design can lead to higher voltage and power consumption when idle, which can explain that heat. If possible, check if your cooler is seated properly and consider tweaking fan profiles in your BIOS for better airflow.

Great advice! I'll definitely check on my cooler installation and fan settings to see if that helps!

Actually, idle temperatures aren't a huge concern as long as performance under load is stable. Many users, especially those who watch YTers, expect lower idle temps but a bit of variance is normal. 55°C idle isn’t necessarily bad! Focus on high-load temps and if you're comfortable, maybe skip the cooler switch for now.

Exactly! It's all about the performance in demanding scenarios. If gaming is smooth, you're in a good spot!

Your temps seem a bit high for idle, but many factors can affect that. Idle temps of 47-49°C aren't excessively dangerous. If you're seeing good performance during gaming with temps under 60°C, you're likely fine. Just make sure your BIOS settings are optimized and consider applying thermal paste again using the cross method to ensure good coverage. Don’t rush into buying a new cooler just yet!

Yeah, I agree! As long as the load temps aren't spiking too high, you're probably okay. Just keep an eye on it!
