What Should I Do After a Scammer Accessed My Computer?

I had a scary experience where a scammer gained brief access to my computer using tools like Screen Connect and Ultra Viewer. They pulled up a fake error report page and attempted to trick me into providing my bank information via a Google Forms link. I disconnected from the internet and removed the Ultra Viewer setup afterward. Now, I'm worried whether they still have access to my device and what steps I should take to ensure my computer is safe. Does deleting Ultra Viewer fully cut off access? Is there a reliable way to check if my computer is secure, or should I just wipe everything and reset it? Also, is this particular scam focused only on stealing bank information, or could their main goal also include permanent access to my system? Thanks for your help!

If they were only after your bank info using a Google Forms link, it’s likely they didn’t install a virus. Still, it’s a good idea to run thorough scans just to be sure. Even if you deleted the access software, make sure you double-check for anything else that might have been installed while they were connected.

The best way to be absolutely sure your computer is clean is to back up your important files and then do a fresh install of your operating system. This guarantees that any potential malware or remote access tools are completely removed. If you want to play it safe but not go through a full reinstall, run malware scans with software like Malwarebytes and RogueKiller. Those should help catch things that traditional scans might miss.

Make sure to change all of your passwords immediately, and consider setting up two-factor authentication. It's also wise to keep an eye out for more scam calls or messages, especially if you've interacted with the scammer in any way. If you're really not sure about the security of your system, using Windows 'System Restore' to go back to a point before you connected with them could help, assuming you have that enabled.
