Looking for a Desktop Environment Without Horizontal Panels

Hey everyone! I'm on the hunt for a desktop environment that doesn't include horizontal panels at the top or bottom. I'm using Linux on a small laptop, so I really want to maximize vertical space. Currently, I'm on Debian with GNOME, and I've set up Dash to Panel with a side panel. Are there any other desktop environments I should check out that meet these criteria?

Many desktop environments let you set panels to auto-hide, but you might need an extension for that feature to work smoothly.

Cinnamon allows you to reposition your panel to any side or even remove it if that's what you're after!

Most desktop environments allow for a vertical side tab setup, including GNOME and KDE. LXQT is another option if you're considering alternatives!

If you're willing to explore, I3wm or Hyprland could be great lightweight choices where you can manage everything without a traditional panel.

In GNOME's default setup, as well as in XFCE and Cinnamon, you can easily change the panels to a vertical position.

With XFCE, you can customize the panels to your liking or remove them entirely if you prefer.
