Is it worth upgrading from a 5GHz 8700K to a DDR4 system?

I'm debating whether I should upgrade my current gaming setup. I have a 5GHz 8700K and 48GB of DDR4 RAM (2x16GB and 2x8GB). Given the ridiculous prices of RAM lately, I'm thinking it might be smarter to just buy a new CPU and motherboard instead of upgrading my RAM. Is there a worthwhile upgrade for me that still uses DDR4? I was considering a used 5800X3D, but those are priced around $400 USD. Should I just sell my current CPU, motherboard, and RAM to start fresh with DDR5, or is sticking with what I have a better option?

I recommend looking into the i5 12400F. If your current motherboard doesn't support 12th gen, you can find a compatible one for around $40-$60. However, I'd suggest staying on AM4 for now given the RAM prices.

The 5800X3D is pretty much on par with the 7600X, which is the entry-level AM5 CPU. If you're looking at equivalent costs for both setups, it may not make sense to go for the 5800X3D.

What about Intel options on socket 1700, like the 12700KF? I've seen DDR4 boards available for that.

Don't forget to check the prices of DDR5 RAM; that can be a consideration too.

You could consider getting a B760 D4 motherboard with a 14600KF. Just sell off the 2x8GB sticks, and you'll end up with a solid 32GB of DDR4.

What does the D4 mean? I prefer keeping my 16GB, can’t there be 4-slot motherboards?

A B550 motherboard with a 5700X3D would be a killer upgrade. The 5700X has more cores and higher performance than your current setup. Plus, it offers way more cache! Just keep in mind that the 5700X3D has 96MB of cache, which is a huge performance boost over what you have now.
