I just built a gaming PC using a 9800X3D, but when I powered it on, I got a 'CPU over temperature error!' message. Oddly enough, the system identifies it as a Ryzen 5 8400F. I purchased this from a well-known online shop in Germany. Has anyone experienced this before, or do you think I might have been scammed?

It seems like someone might have replaced the CPU and returned it. The overtemp error suggests there wasn’t any thermal paste applied correctly, which isn't normal for a working chip.
It sounds like someone might have swapped the IHS (integrated heat spreader). There’s a chance they printed '9800X3D' over an 8400F chip. You should definitely contact the seller about this problem.
First, check the text on the CPU itself. If it’s showing as an 8400F, then that’s likely what you have. Also, how much did you pay for it? If it was much cheaper than a typical 9800X3D, it might be a scam. I recommend returning it immediately.
I paid 420€ which seems to be the regular price for it here. The box and even the CPU lid say 9800X3D.
If you checked the CPU and it shows 8400F, then that’s what you likely received. I suggest contacting the seller to report this issue and ask for a refund.

I can't believe this could happen to me. I just assumed the lid marking meant it was legit.
